Arielle,

Middle aged Softball club coach here. I think that I am pretty liberal in thought when it comes to my girls. I just want to be as inclusive as possible. Not to ruffle feathers. But I have a question; the modern definition of the word queer is inclusive to all LGBT people. So why can't we just use the word queer instead of guessing what people want to be called. I love your view on heterosexual and homosexual umbrellas. So much simpler. I have girls on my team that are queer some are bisexual some are gay some are lesbian and some that like to refer to themselves as trans curious. I have 45 girls in my club all within the ages of 14 to 18. I don't know what to do to make sure that I provide them a pillar of self-esteem to grow upon when I do not know what to call my girls. This is not a topic of conversation that happens a lot, but my girls confide in me because their home life might not be as accepting. So I just do not want to make a mistake. It would be a hell of a lot easier if the whole lgbtq community can decide that the word queer can make it a lot easier. I know you can't hold a meeting and Take a vote to make my life easier but what advice do you have for a coach that is just looking out for his girls best interest at heart.

I love your stuff. Thank you in advance for your time with my question.

Coach Mak.

Words like "queer" mean different things to different people. You won't ever get everyone to agree on what it means or how to use it.

I agree with you that it'd be a lot easier, though.

Personally, I would not be offended if a person inferred that I was "queer." But there are people who are offended by the word. There are some people who prefer to be called "queer" and to NOT get more specific about it. Everyone's different. There's no easy shortcut, unfortunately.

Queer in my day was used as an insult. Best not to even bring up the subject. Just play ball.
